book review: Courageous Women of the Bible
This summer has been busy. Not the kind of busy where you're doing thing after thing, following through on the too many commitments you made. It's been, "we have a family" busy. It's been, "how many times a day do these kids eat?" busy. It's been, "Mom, come see this!" busy. It's been busy with trips to the pool, ice pops and days at the park. Lest you think we're over here having the most idyllic summer ever, it's also been, "he kicked me," and, "she took my brush," and a, "we never get to do anything fun," (despite the aforementioned activities) busy. It's been, "isn't it bedtime yet?" busy. It's been Netflix busy.
On the whole it's been good, but it's meant that on occasion I miss something. I've missed writing, I've missed interacting with friends and readers. I've been trying to be less plugged in and so I've missed some emails and texts and posts. This week I realized that I'd missed a book review. A couple months back I'd been given this book to review and then, to be honest, in the midst of the end of the school year, I forgot about it! Completely!
But you guys, God is faithful, and when I forget and mess up, He still uses it. I can not tell you how blessed I have been by LaTan Roland Murphy's Courageous Women of the Bible and the timing in my life could not have been better! So let me tell you a little about this amazing book!
In Courageous Women of the Bible, LaTan Roland Murphy unpacks eleven women of the Bible and the courage it took to live their lives and face the circumstances around them. I'm going to address upfront, as LaTan does, that she does take some poetic license as she looks into each woman's life. Taking us to Scripture, reading what was recorded about each woman, LaTan clearly lets the reader know what she insightfully infers about each woman and her situation.
Addressing issues that we still face today as women, LaTan uses gentle and loving words that I also found so convicting as she helps the reader face their fears. Courage to act, courage to love, courage in uncertain times. Courage to give, courage to deal with sin. There is so much in this book! Each chapter ends with questions to help you apply what you've learned. You can use these questions on your own or as a study guide in a group. The same is true of the "Courage Coming" section at the end of the book, where the reader is given space to dig a little deeper through journaling. I can't recommend it highly enough and I can't wait to get together with some friends and go through this study!
